Akif Alizadeh (Azerbaijani: Akif Ağamehdi oğlu Əlizadə) – is Azerbaijan's famous geologist scientist, Honored Scientist, State Priza Laureate, the President of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (2013), chairman of the board of Trustees of the Knowledge Fund under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, member of Baku International Multiculturalism Center Board of Trustees.[1]

Life

Akif Alizadeh was born on February 25, 1934. His family is associated with a number of prominent figures.

He graduated from secondary school with silver medal and started studying in the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industrial University. In 1957 he began working at the Institute of Geology of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS). The Institute had become a permanent place of his activity. In 1980 he was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan SSR, and in 1989 – a full member of the Academy. He has been the President of the Academy since 2013.[2]

Scientific activities

Akif Alizadeh was one of the highly qualified young professionals of the USSR and youngest deputy director of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. He understood the importance of the application of traditional paleontology and stratigraphy of the physical and chemical methods and carried out his first investigation with the use of isotope geochemistry since the beginning of the 1970s. His research interests cover the regional stratigraphy of the Cretaceous deposits of Azerbaijan. He has been the member of the Paleontological Society of the Soviet Union, the chairman of Caucasus Regional Stratigraphic Commission, the member of the Scientific Council on USSR Academy of Sciences Biosphere Problems since 1960.[3]

The Institute of Geology had become one of the leading centers in the systems of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences during his leadership (deputy director since earlier 1970 and as a director since 1976). The Institute of Geology is the most grant-winning leader among other scientific institutions of Azerbaijan. The cooperation with CIS countries and the Pacific region is activated and the relations are being restored.

The Institute of Geology takes an active part in solving the problems of the economic development of the country as well as the fundamental aspects of the science of geology. The books titled Geology of Azerbaijan in eight volumes and published with the leadership of Akif Akizadeh are the collection of fundamental works.[4]

With great erudition, Akif Alizadeh solves regional geology and hydrogeology issues unambiguously. In recent years, he focuses his activities on geoecology- a new scientific field, which has become a priority in the activities of the Institute of Geology headed by him. The academics of scientific world along with Pavlov and G. Krymgoltsa said that Akif Alizadeh have great contribution to the field of geology and the achievements of the scientists of Azerbaijan in study of Cretaceous Belemnoids (1984).

Akif Alizadeh was awarded with the State Prize Laureate of the Republic of Azerbaijan for his works on the Stratigraphy of the Cretaceous Sediments in 1991.[5]
