Barbara Weathers (born December 7, 1963) is an American R&B/soul singer, and former lead singer of R&B vocal group, Atlantic Starr.[1]

Overview

Weathers joined up at the age of 13 with an R&B band known as Covacus. This band was from her native area of Greensboro, North Carolina. She eventually left Covacus in 1984 to join up with Atlantic Starr. In doing so she replaced Sharon Bryant, who had embarked upon a solo career.[1]

Weathers went on to sing as a co-lead vocalist on the band's 1985 album As the Band Turns.[2] As The Band Turns was certified Gold in the US by the RIAA.[3]

Off the LP came the track "Secret Lovers" which got to Nos. 1, 3 & 4 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary, Hot 100 and Hot R&B Songs charts respectively.[4][5][6] Another single entitled Freak-A-Ristic got to No. 6 on the Billboard Hot R&B Songs chart.[7]

As well Weathers sang upon Atlantic Starr's 1987 album All In The Name Of Love.[8] All In The Name Of Love was certified Platinum in the US by the RIAA.[9]

The album cut "Always" got to No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100, Hot R&B and Adult Contemporary Songs charts respectively.[10][11][12] Weathers eventually left Atlantic Starr in 1987 to pursue a solo career.[1]

She went on to issue her debut solo album in 1990 on Reprise Records.[13] The LP got to No. 37 on the Blues & Soul Top UK Soul Albums chart.[14] Music & Media called the LP "a big, squeaky clean production" with "a singer of charm and variety in Weathers".[15] People also noted the album as "an attractive and smooth collection".[16] As well the album cut "The Master Key" rose to no. 13 upon the US Billboard Hot R&B Singles chart.[17]

Weathers went on to issue her 1995 sophomore LP titled Seeing for the Very First Time.[18] During October 2011 she released Satisfaction Guaranteed, her third studio album.

Weathers is also a member of jazz saxophonist Kirk Whalum's band.[19]
