The Battle of Sacheon was a naval engagement which took place during the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592–98). It occurred at Sacheon where I Sunsin's fleet managed to destroy more than 12 large Japanese ships.[1]

Background

Yi Sunsin received news from Won Gyun were already at Sacheon. Fearing that they were planning an attack on Yeosu, Yi Sunsin set sail with 23 warships on 8 July. He met up with Won Gyun at Noryang and ordered him to mop up stragglers after the battle and then approached Sacheon.[1]

Situation at Sacheon

When they approached Sacheon, they found 400 Japanese soldiers fortifying their position on a hill overlooking the port. There were 12 large Japanese ships among other vessels anchored in the harbor. Hoping to draw the Japanese into open waters, he turned his ships around and withdrew. The Japanese took the bait and more than half of them on shore rushed to give chase. Once in the waters they engaged in combat with Na daeyong leading the way in his geobukseon, the turtle ship. The Japanese ships could not match up to the firepower of the Korean battleships. Wakizaka Yasuharu and some of his retainers managed to hook onto a Korean warship but were beaten back by counter fire.[2]

At this point the Japanese who remained on shore started shooting at the Koreans. Yi Sunsin directed his ships to shore and began bombarding the enemy position until they withdrew, however he himself was struck in the left shoulder by a bullet. The wound was not fatal and he survived the battle.[2]

All 12 large Japanese ships were destroyed.[2]

Aftermath

Yi Sunsin destroyed all the large Japanese ships and left a few small enemy ships behind hoping to lure back the Japanese who had fled.[2]
