Bob Moretti Speaker of the California State Assembly

Robert Moretti (June 3, 1936 – May 12, 1984) was an American politician. He was born in Detroit, Michigan to Marino and Mary Moretti. His father was born in Ovindoli, Italy, and his mother was of Armenian descent. Moretti was a democrat from the state of California.

Moretti served in the California State Assembly (1965–1974), representing the 42nd District and serving as Speaker of the Assembly (1971–74). As a democrat, he was a staunch opponent of republican governor Ronald Reagan, who was elected US President in 1980. In 1974, Moretti was a candidate for the office of Governor of California but was defeated in the democratic primary by Jerry Brown, who went on to win the general election.[citation needed]

Bob Moretti died of a heart attack while playing tennis in 1984 at the age of 47.[citation needed]
