Emily Pogorelc (born 1996) is an American operatic soprano.

Early life

Pogorelc was born in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, but grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She began performing at the age of nine, following her mother's footsteps. Her mother Karen, who is a graduate of University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee with a degree in musical performance had encouraged her daughter to perform in various school plays. In one of such plays, she played a role of Gretl in Bay Players' production of The Sound of Music.[1] She attended Whitefish Bay High School during which time she was a winner of the Florentine Opera High School Master Class Competition, the Classical Singer Magazine Competition, the Music Teachers National Association Competition, the Schmidt Competition and the Walgreen's National Concerto Competition as well as Friedrich and Virginia Schorr Memorial Award. She also performed with the Florentine, Skylight and Opera a la Carte and attended summer program at the Walnut Hill.[2]

Career

After graduating from the Curtis Institute of Music in 2018, Pogorelc became a participant at the Aix-en-Provence and Glimmerglass Festivals where she played such memorable roles as Romilda in Serse and Berenice in L'occasione fa il ladro.[3]

From 2015 to 2016 her repertoire included roles such as Musetta in Giacomo Puccini's La bohème and Barbarina in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro which premiered at the Perelman Theater in May 2015. The same year, she sang Quatre Chansons de Jeunesse of Claude Debussy and Richard Strauss's Drei Lieder der Ophelia. In February 2015 Pogorelc sang as a soloist Luciano Berio's Sinfonia which was performed at Carnegie Verizon Halls of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts.[4]

In March 2016 she sang with the Lansdowne Symphony Orchestra[4] and in April of the same year appeared in the role of Chan Parker in Charlie Parker’s Yardbird of Chan Parker and Daniel Schnyder at the Apollo Theater.[5] In July 2016 she played the role of Johanna in Sweeney Todd[6]

Pogorelc is a member of the Ryan Opera Center at Lyric Opera of Chicago where she performs such operas as Jules Massenet's Cendrillon and Richard Strauss's Elektra. In 2018 she made an operatic debut in Leonard Bernstein's Candide with the Washington National Opera.[7]

During the 2019-2020 season she performed such roles as Masha in The Queen of Spades, Zerlina in Don Giovanni, and Woglinde in Gotterdammerung and Das Rheingold.[3]

Awards

Emily Pogorelc was a recipient of the 1st prize at the 2018 Carolyn Bailey and Dominick Argento Vocal Competition in New Orleans.[8]
