Kyōko Saitō (Japanese: 齊藤京子, Hepburn: Saitō Kyōko) is member of Japanese idol group Hinatazaka46. She is represented by Sony Music Records, and is a model for the fashion magazine ar. Her fans are known as the Kyonkois (きょんこいず, Kyonkoizu).

Career

Music

Saitō had aspired to become a singer since middle school.[1] After trying and failing multiple auditions, she tried auditioning for Keyakizaka46's subgroup Hiragana Keyakizaka46, which she learned about from her friend and then Keyakizaka46 member Yui Imaizumi.[2] Her musical career began on 11 May 2016 when she passed the auditions, which was hosted on the streaming platform Showroom. Saitō, along with ten other people that passed the audition, joined Neru Nagahama in Hiragana Keyakizaka46 and was known as the "first generation".[3] Her first concert occurred on 28 October of the same year at Akasaka Blitz, where she performed Kanji Keyakizaka46's songs "Silent Majority" and "Sekai ni wa Ai Shika Nai", as well as Hiragana Keyakizaka46's own "Hiragana Keyaki".[4]

During her time at Hiragana Keyakizaka46, she has consistently appeared in every single between Sekai ni wa Ai Shika Nai and Kuroi Hitsuji, including a center position in the song "Soredemo Aruiteru", a B-side for the single Kaze ni Fukarete mo.[5] After Hiragana Keyakizaka46 was renamed into Hinatazka46, Saitō has also appeared in every single to date. She also performed in the song "Hatsukoi Door", a B-side of Jiwaru Days performed by Sakamichi AKB, which included members of AKB48 and Sakamichi Series members.[6]

In June 2020, Saitō announced that the name of her fandom would be Kyonkois (きょんこいず, Kyonkoizu), a combination between her name and "love" (, koi).[7][8]

Modeling

Saitō is a regular model for the fashion magazine ar, published monthly.[9]

Saitō's solo photobook, titled Totteoki no Koibito (とっておきの恋人, Special Lover), was scheduled for release on January 19, 2021. It was produced by ar magazine's editorial team with the concept of "dating at various locations in Tokyo".[10] The initial print run was originally 115,000 copies, but due to popular demand, a total of 40,000 additional copies were produced during its release week.[11] The book placed first in the photobook sales ranking for its release week with an estimated 84,230 copies sold, according to Oricon.[12]

Other ventures

Saitō is known among fans for being a ramen enthusiast, prompting her to choose "I love ramen, I'm Kyōko Saitō" (ラーメン大好き、齊藤京子です) as her personal catchphrase.[13] She was featured in a 2018 television show titled "Keyakizaka46 Ramen Daisuki, Saitō Kyōko Desu", which is taken from her catchphrase. On the show, Saitō, along with other Hiragana Keyakizaka46 members, tried multiple ramen restaurants to find her favorite one.[14] In April 2019, she was invited to be an ambassador for the 2019 Ramen Girls Expo in Shizuoka.[15]

Saitō is also known for speaking babigo (バビ語) very quickly, a language game. She demonstrates this ability often through variety shows, with fellow member Kumi Sasaki as "interpreter".[16][17]

Saitō has appeared in all of Hiragana Keyakizaka46 and Hinatazaka46's television dramas, namely Re:Mind and Dasada. On January 29, 2021, it was announced that she would join the cast for the TV adaptation of the Tetsuya Honda novel Borderless (ボーダレス), which would feature members of Nogizaka46, Sakurazaka46, and Hinatazaka46 co-starring in a television drama for the first time.[18]
