Mircea Petescu (15 October 1943 – 16 December 2018)[1] was a Romanian footballer and coach.[2]

Playing career

Club

Under his leadership, UTA Arad eliminated the defending European Cup champions Feyenoord in the 1970–71 season.

Managerial career

After years of preparation, Petescu and his wife defected while on a state-approved vacation to the Netherlands.[3] There he started a coaching career and became known for promoting youngsters in the teams he coached. He was coach of Louis van Gaal at Telstar and Sparta[4] and discovered Danny Blind amongst many other players.
