Nun jauchzt dem Herren, alle Welt

"Nun jauchzt dem Herren, alle Welt"
German Christian hymn
Textby David Denicke
Based onPsalm 100
Published1646 (1646)

"Nun jauchzt dem Herren, alle Welt" (Now rejoice to the Lord, all world) is a German Christian hymn, a paraphrase of Psalm 100. The text was written by David Denicke, and published in a 1646 hymnal. The song is contained in German hymnals, the Protestant Evangelisches Gesangbuch and the Catholic hymnal Gotteslob.

History

David Denicke wrote the text in 1646 as a paraphrase of Psalm 100, calling to serve God in joyful sound as part of the service.[1][2] He rephrased a work by Cornelius Becker, "Jauchzet dem Herren alle Welt" from the Becker Psalter of 1602, to polish its language according to the poetry rules by Martin Opitz. He elaborates the thought of God as a Good Shepherd, as in Psalm 23.[2] Denicke wrote six stanzas of four lines each, which appeared in the hymnal Hannoversches Gesangbuch in 1646.[3] A seventh stanza was added as a doxology (Gloria Patri), which was a specialty of the hymnal, in the Lüneburg edition in 1652.[3][4]

The song is contained in the Protestant hymnal Evangelisches Gesangbuch (1993) as EG 288,[2] and in the Catholic hymnal Gotteslob (2013) as GL 144.[4]

Melody and settings

The melody in a triple metre is from the 14th century, appearing first in a Moosburg Cantionale.[5] It was originally connected to a Christmas carol.[2] The melody appears in the 1646 hymnal as one of eleven melodies in an appendix. In its 1657 edition, it is connected to "Nun jauchzt dem Herren, alle Welt".[5]

Johannes Petzold composed between 1953 and 1962 six different settings of the hymn, for voices and for instruments.[6] Karl Norbert Schmid composed a song cantata (Liedkantate) for congregation, choir, organ and winds ad lib. in 1986.[7] Francesco Giannoni composed a chorale prelude in 2007.[8]
